As of January 2012, the Highlands Community League does not have a swimming agreement allowing league members to access City of Edmonton swimming pools; however we are looking into participating in a community swim with Eastglen pool.
Updates will be posted in upcoming editions of the Highlands/Bellevue HIGHLIGHTS E-newsletter and in this space.
In late January, the EFCL, the City of Edmonton and leagues across Edmonton are investigating a new pool allocation strategy that features a specific day and time for community swims. For more information or to voice your opinion, please contact Shahryar Khan, EFCL at (780) 437-2913.
The final drawings of the Highands Spray Deck Development have finally arrived from the desk of City of Edmonton Planners and they look wonderful! At this point the spray deck redevelopment is contingent upon successful grant funding.
Large scale image will be on display at the Highlands/Bellevue Holiday Potluck on December 10 at the Highlands United Church from 5pm - 9pm. We hope you'll stop by for a festive dinner, visit with friends and neighbours and take a peek. You can also, check out the Highlands Spray Deck Plans online.
Report summary to be brought to Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Nov. 1.
Administration would welcome representatives from TPRAC to speak to the committee meeting or provide written input.
In 2005, a walkability audit was completed through the communities of Highlands and Bellevue to explore ways in which residents could create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. The residents were concerned with crossing 112 Avenue safely. The main recommendation of the audit was to consider a reduction in the number of travel lanes along 112 Avenue between 50 Street and 68 Street to provide one lane in each direction in combination with a common left turn lane and either bike lanes or wider sidewalks/ boulevards.
Following a technical assessment and a series of open houses exploring the option of reducing the number of lanes along 112 Avenue, City Council requested that the concept of reducing the number of lanes along 112 Avenue be reviewed with relevant communities approximately 18 months before the scheduled reconstruction of 112 Avenue occurs.
The section of 112 Avenue between 50 Street and 68 Street has been identified for reconstruction, but the project currently remains unfunded. However, Transportation Services will present a report to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee (TIC) on November 1st recommending that if budget is approved to reconstruct 112 Avenue, a study to reduce the number of traffic lanes on 112 Avenue through Highlands be undertaken with the results of the study to be brought to Transportation and Infrastructure Committee before the end of 2012.
Apart from a possible reduction in lanes along 112 Avenue, the reconstruction project will consider sidewalk widening along with minor aesthetic features and/or landscaping within the road right-of-way.
The TIC report will be made available to the general public on Thursday, October 27th. Further information regarding the November 1st TIC meeting may be found on the City's website at:
www.edmonton.ca/city_government/city_organization/tpw-committee-schedule.aspx
Please note, there is no specific time set for the presentation of the report and the time of the presentation will depend on the amount of reports submitted to the committee. Citizens who wish to speak to the report at the meeting may do so by filling out the Request to Speak Form located on the City website listed above.
If you have any questions regarding the 112 Avenue TIC report, please contact Darryl Mullen at (780)496-1699.
