Fine Motor Camp

A fun and interactive camp for children grades 1 - 4 who find printing, using scissors or other fine motor activities challenging. The camp will be run by two experienced pediatric occupational therapists. A multi-sensory approach will be used along with co-operative games and crafts to practice the skills needed for hand functioning. This camp is designed for children who may be experiencing mild to moderate delays in fine motor development or who would
benefit from extra practice.

Printing Basics: Emphasizes grasp development, formation of letters, legibility, review of lower and upper case, copying, using school tools (scissors, glue) in hand manipulation skills, eye hand coordination and strength. This includes a 1/2 hour post fine motor screening and summary report for parents.

This camp will use a multi-sensory approach combining fine and gross motor movement to enhance learning.

Skating

During the skating season, the following Skating Guidelines are strongly enforced during all public skate times. Please take a moment to read through this document as it is important to all skaters sharing the ice.

Sports

The Highlands Community League has a dedicated Sports Director who is very interested in starting a number of programs for community members. Currently Soccer is the main focus of the sports program, but there is potential for other community sports including basketball, floor hockey, ice hockey and tennis.

Golf, curling, lawn bowling and tennis are available in the community through private clubs. Please visit the Sports page for more information.

Swimming

As of January 2012, the Highlands Community League does not have a swimming agreement allowing league members to access City of Edmonton swimming pools; however we are looking into participating in a community swim with Eastglen pool.

Updates will be posted in upcoming editions of the Highlands/Bellevue HIGHLIGHTS E-newsletter and in this space.

In late January, the EFCL, the City of Edmonton and leagues across Edmonton are investigating a new pool allocation strategy that features a specific day and time for community swims. For more information or to voice your opinion, please contact Shahryar Khan, EFCL at (780) 437-2913.

Yoga - Family

Bring the whole family for some quality time as we breathe, learn yoga postures and relax through games, songs and stories.  This class is appropriate for all ages and abilities.  Those new to yoga are particularly welcome.

Program Cancelled Due to Lack of Registrants.

What can yoga do for my child?
Yoga is an ancient practice that helps the body and mind become stronger, flexible and more resilient, while at the same time fostering patience, relaxation and confidence.  Yoga is non-competitve and even encourages children to work together to achieve their own personal goals.  Over time, children who practice yoga can become stronger and more flexible, concentrate longer, be more patient and focused at home and at school, and be more confident in thier bodies.

The practice is geared towards the interests and experiences of children and will include time for active movement as well as quiet meditation.

What Equipment Does My Child Need?
Children should come dressed to move- sweatpants or shorts, and a tee shirt is best.  Children are encouraged to go barefoot during practice, but socks are acceptable as well.  A yoga mat is beneficial, but not essential.  Your child should also have a water bottle and have eaten no sooner than an hour prior to class.

For more information or to register, please contact Jennifer Cassidy at (780) 479-6062 or by email at grrlj@hotmail.com
