Edmonton Expo Lands UPDATE

You may have noticed construction equipment busy at work in the area east of the East Edmonton Health Centre on 112 Ave and 79 Street. This is “Phase 1” of the City’s redevelopment of the ExpoLands area. The City is installing infrastructure so that Cantiro Homes (cantiro.ca/homes) can begin construction of approximately 150 homes in the Phase 1 area.

The planning framework for Expo Lands was originally approved by Council in 2021 after community consultation. Lovey Grewal, Project Manager for the Expo Lands redevelopment at the City of Edmonton, met with the Highlands Expo Lands Sub-Committee on January 27 providing an update. He informed us that on April 21st he will be presenting to Council a “no changes” approach to the originally approved plan and providing Council with background information. The Coliseum demolition will begin this year with the long process of abatement: removing asbestos and lead … all interior work that will be almost invisible to passersby.

It is expected that the final stage of demolition, the “wrecking ball”, will happen in 2027/2028. As the construction area expands beyond Phase 1, Explore Edmonton events may be relocated to the then vacant Coliseum area (Edmonton Expo Centre will remain the same). At that point in time, it is anticipated the originally approved redevelopment plan will need to be revisited by Council.
