Good Afternoon Folks, please see the latest Exhibition Lands update below.
Edmonton Exhibition Lands Update: April 2026
Phase One Development & Construction
Sureway Construction was the successful bidder for the construction of the public right-of-ways and neighborhood infrastructure for Phase One of the Exhibition Lands redevelopment. Over the past six months, they have been focusing on installing storm sewer infrastructure. As the snow melts and the weather becomes more favourable, they will continue with utilities as well as constructing roads, paths and sidewalks throughout the southwest corner of the development over the upcoming construction season.
Road Closures
Listed below are the temporary road closures in effect from April 16 to December 1, 2026, to support Phase One construction. An area map has been included for reference.
-
79 Street between 112 Avenue and 114 Avenue
-
Borden Park Road between 79 Street and east of 78 Street
-
113 Avenue between 78 Street and just west of 79 Street
-
Minor road improvements around 79 Street and 112 Avenue (south), which are anticipated to cause minimal disruption
New Urban Farm Location
Due to unfavorable weather conditions, the transfer of the new urban farm to Explore Edmonton has been delayed by several weeks. The urban farm is still anticipated to open this summer, and we’re looking forward to welcoming farmers to their new home.
Coliseum Deconstruction and Site Redevelopment
The Coliseum Deconstruction and Site Redevelopment is currently in the planning and design phase. More information will be shared once the deconstruction and site redevelopment details are confirmed.
In the coming weeks, site preparation will begin at the Coliseum site. This work is being undertaken to prepare for this project, and will involve:
-
Site investigations
-
Surveying and mapping
-
Utility locating
-
Trailer mobilization and setup
-
Soil testing
-
Some hazardous materials abatement and selective deconstruction in small, isolated areas
While this work is anticipated to have minimal impact on nearby residents and businesses, there may be increased noise levels and traffic. The City is working to reduce work-related impacts while keeping residents and business owners informed. To learn more about the project, please visit edmonton.ca/
Edmonton Spectrum Demolition Project
Hazardous materials abatement continues on the Edmonton Spectrum building and has been completed on all other structures on the property. Demolition work continues and is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026. Nearby roadway and business access will not be impacted by this work. The City is working to reduce work-related impacts while keeping residents and businesses informed. To learn more about the project, please visit edmonton.ca/SpectrumDemolition
Urban Planning Committee Report on Explore Edmonton Land Needs Assessment
City Administration has worked closely with Explore Edmonton (Edmonton EXPO Centre) since late last year to explore potential site adjustments to accommodate large, outdoor events. The City and its consultant, Urban Strategies Inc., hosted two interest-holder sessions (in person and virtually) last spring to gather feedback, which is included as part of this Council Report.
The report provides an update on Administration’s ongoing, collaborative work with Explore Edmonton to program the Coliseum lands as a long-term, interim outdoor festival and events space until future development takes place. This gives Administration and Explore Edmonton time to assess operations and to determine whether the approved planning framework needs to be amended to accommodate long-term large event delivery.
Administration was originally set to present the report to Council in June 2025. However, due to scheduling constraints, the date was rescheduled to Urban Planning Committee on April 21, 2026. The April 21 meeting agenda and report can be found at edmonton.ca/meetings.
